RS/6000
This past week I have been screwing with my RS/6000 and started by installing AIX 5.1 on it. AIX 5.1 came with 5 CDs and I figured this OS install would be very long. But, when the installation completed with only using the first CD, I was releaved and quite disconcerted at the same time (and there we have it, issue number one).
Next I decided that having access to the Internet would probably be a good thing. So, I plug in the network cable, fire up a terminal, grab an IP addess and search for a web browser. To my dismay there aren’t any web broswers installed. There were other nifty binaries such as ping, and ftp…but no links, lynx, elinks, or mozilla. I think use the System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) to search for the Mozilla package. Low and behold there is one. I tell it to instll it and it asks for a CD named Expansion Pack. Out of those four other CDs bundled with AIX, none of them were that. As a last resort, I went to download Mozilla for AIX from IBM, but, when I went to install it it didnt do anything (issue number two).
At this time I decided that Linux might be a better choice of OS than AIX, so I tried to install any Linux distribution that had a PowerPC port. Unfortunatly, it’s not as easy as inserting the CD, rebooting, and having an installer start. The process involves pretty much everything on this site. The main component is a serial cable, which I don’t have (issue number three).
So, three problems and I only have an idea how to fix one.
Problem List:
- Figure out why I have four extra AIX CDs.
- Get the Internet working.
- Get Linux working.
